The opportunity

$2.13 Billion Already in Play

Farmer Holding Tomatoes

Australian governments spend more than $2.13 billion per year on food across public institutions and programs.

This is not a future opportunity – it is a current one.

Because public procurement represents predictable demand, it can: -

  • De‑risk transitions for producers and suppliers

  • Support and build resilience in local and regional food systems

  • Reduce the environmental and biodiversity impacts of the food system

  • Improve food quality and nutrition in public settings

  • Deliver long‑term value for public expenditure

The opportunity is not about spending more – it is about spending smarter. (Read Section 2 of the report for how we determined the spend).

Through good food purchasing can move from the incremental to transformative action and  improve health/equity, economic, climate and food systems outcomes
